Audience: General Public

Description:
It is traditional in Matilda’s teaching to eat in community. There is an hour-long lunch break on both days; please bring a bag lunch both days (or purchase lunch in the Bastyr vegetarian cafeteria) and plan to eat as a group in the class. We will also share a cold potluck at the end of each day so bring a dish to share.

Create your own unique drum, drumstick and rattle. This workshop is done in ceremony, teaching deep respect for the animals and trees used in the process of making mother earth's heartbeat audible. The drums will be made from raw animal hide and cedar wood; the beautiful drumstick crafted from fruitwood, leather and old wool socks; and the rattle is made of hide, fruitwood and seeds. While you are making your creations Matilda will teach you the care and feeding of your instruments, as well as how to use them in healing and cleansing ceremonies. We will sing songs and tell stories throughout the two days. You may bring an audio recorder if you wish and tape the class. Birthing a drum is an intense process, one not easily forgotten.

During the second Sunday we will be finishing the rattles and making the drumsticks. When they are completed you will play your drums for the first time and put a song in them. The only other thing we ask you to bring is an open mind and a joyful heart.

Course Notes: Note: Please bring two large old towels (for first day only), a pair of wool socks (old or new), and any special small pebbles or beads you may want to include in your rattle. All other materials are provided.

Instructor: Matilda Meints is an artist and mystic. She has spent a lifetime learning about our world, both seen and unseen. She walks a Native American spiritual path. The medicine way is infused into her entire life and it is how she relates to her environment and people. She has spent the last 25 years learning and practicing these ways. Her goal is to help everyone to be who they truly are.
